The definition is based on economic and social integration, NOT physical proximity. So if the majority of people living in an area outside the political boundaries of a city still travel to the city for work, school, or leisure, then that area is said to be in the “metropolitan area” of the city.

The “metropolitan area” of a city is defined as all areas surrounding a city that can be said to have a high degree of economic or social integration with the city. As of 2015, most of the world`s largest cities are located in India, China and the African continent. They were the centres of the world`s population, but just as the populations of developing countries have soared over the past century, so have the populations of the megacities of the developing world. A century ago, the largest cities in the world were New York, London and Paris. Jerusalem does not even reach 1 million, so it cannot be classified as a megacity. It could also be argued that improving lower-class budgets would also increase tax revenues, as funding could be used for job training, child care, and reducing drug use and crime. However, there has also been a backlash against gentrification because some see it as a tax break for the middle and upper classes, rather than spending much-needed money on social programs for low-income families. The logic behind gentrification is that it not only reduces crime and homelessness It also brings tax revenue to cities to improve the city`s infrastructure. European megacities include London and Paris, and the UN estimates that the number of megacities in the world will only increase. Of the world`s 30 largest megacities, 20 are located in Asia and South America alone, including Baghdad, Bangkok, Buenos Aires, Delhi, Dhaka, Istanbul, Jakarta, Karachi, Kolkata, Manila, Mexico City, Mumbai, Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto, Rip de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Shanghai, Tehran and Tokyo-Yokohama.
